GDG Brunswick Goes to Google I/O!

A Note from Naomi

I am so incredibly proud of what we’ve built here in Brunswick. This month, that work goes global.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be traveling to Mountain View to represent GDG Brunswick at Google I/O on May 19th! While I’m at the Shoreline Amphitheater, I’ll be focused on bringing the latest AI and DevTech insights back to our coastal community.

But before I head West, we have a big month planned right here at home.

May 7th | Build with AI: Coastal Problem Mapping (Week 1): We are kicking off a high-impact, four-week sprint! This first session is all about identifying the environmental challenges facing our coast and mapping out how GenAI can help address them. Let’s lay the groundwork for I/O-ready projects. 🏛️ Local Leadership, Regional Impact

A Unified Voice for 13 States

We are thrilled to announce that our Chapter Leads, Naomi Latini Wolfe and Ajay Singh Karayat, have been elected as the Google Developer Group Mentors for the North America Southern subregion!

This is a major win for our chapter. As the only two mentors serving this 13-state region, GDG Brunswick now holds a unique leadership position. This role gives our local community a direct line to Google and a powerful voice in the broader North American tech ecosystem.

What this means for our community

Direct Advocacy: We now represent the interests and challenges of southern developers directly to Google leadership.
Exclusive Resources: Our chapter is at the front of the line for new programs, top-tier speakers, and global event support.

The Expert Column:

Closing the Loop: Cultural Stewardship in Global Tech

At GDG Brunswick, we often talk about "building with the community." But what does that look like in practice?

I recently had the opportunity to put this into action when I noticed a transliteration error in the Om Tamil Calendar, an app used by millions. The current Tamil New Year was misspelled, a detail that undermines the tool's cultural integrity.

I reached out to the developers at Coderays, and their response became a masterclass in stewardship. Why? They respected the culture.

The GDG Brunswick Lesson:

Users are Domain Experts: Treat feedback as a free quality-assurance layer.
Agility is the Best PR: A 24-hour response builds more brand loyalty than a thousand ads.
Localization is Empathy: Accuracy in translation shows your users that you see and respect them.

As we continue our work this year, I challenge every member of our chapter to look at their feedback loops. Are we just "building," or are we listening?

💡 Lead’s Challenge: Are You Closing the Loop? Before your next deployment, ask your team:

The Accuracy Test: Have we vetted our localization with a native speaker or domain expert?
The Response Protocol: Do we have a system to acknowledge user-reported bugs within 24 hours?
The Impact Check: If this "small" error persists, whose experience or culture are we overlooking?
